#32 | Folkfest: The Folks

I spent the past two evenings hanging out at Prairieland Park during the Folkfest festivities. I took my camera last night to take photos of my homie Ron who was dancing at the Philippines pavilion and Christian who was drumming at the Caribbean pavilion. But running into people and hanging out with Aashna, I ended up getting some fun snaps of those we shared food, drinks and stories with. I wish I stopped more people to take photos, it was a blast running into everyone!

#31 | New Balance 1600 Elite Edition

I've been going strong on the New Balance game and am very impressed with the quality of the Elite edition models. I have always been stoked on the look of a pair of selvedge jeans and athletic footwear and the width of the New Balance shoes allows me to take part of the look. The texture of the suede and the fit of the show are impressive and I recommend them to all.

#29 | Retired Naked & Famous Denim

Four years ago I purchased a pair of Naked & Famous denim from Calgary's Holt Renfrew, specifically the broken twill Skinny Guy. These were my fourth pair of raw denim, but admittedly the first pair that I put significant effort into. I chose these because it was a Canadian brand, an entry pair of raw denim and was a fan of how the broken twill pair turned out.

I remember sizing down a size because the Internet told me to and had a tough first two weeks of wear. I recommend that you should expect stretching, but buy something snug and comfortable at its first wear. These were a great starting pair for being under $200 and still offering Japanese selvedge (the end of the roll can be seen on the cuff photo). Japanese denim is highly sought after for their old practices, machines and general care to ensure quality.

I wore these for four years and gave them four washes. Many of these companies recommend washing your pair six months in, which I agree on but next time will watch in two month cycles after. The bacteria, rocks, dirt, etc. break down the fibres in your jeans making them more susceptible to tears we hate like crotch blows to tears we like such as near the whiskers. Now I have to retire these due to four crotch repairs that make these uncomfortable.

Did I like these? I like the fit, the fades, the contrast and the attachment I had to an item of clothing. But being introduced to other brands and my own brand Olé, I want to see what other companies can offer. I'm interested in know what you guys wear, what you guys like and what you guys don't like. #28 | The Fringe

Saturday night I popped by the Fringe with Aashna for supper. We grabbed a black bean and quinoa burger from Nosh, an Ace Style cheeseburger from Ace and Aash bought a Thrive juice for herself! Street style food is something to appreciate, it shows that you don't always need to ball out or that a restaurant doesn't need the finest kitchen to prepare something that will satisfy you.

We didn't catch any street shows, this year it felt like there were less performances. The vibe felt a bit different, it felt like there was more open space but I've always liked the Fringe. The Fringe lets locals gather to support people who are trying to make a living for themselves or individuals trying to share a hobby.
